What Happens When an Air Conditioner Sits All Winter?

If your air conditioner isn't working properly at the beginning of summer, this may be due to a number of different factors, including winter inactivity.
  1. Parts

    • Air conditioning systems are typically comprised of two main parts: a compressor and a blower. While the compressor doesn't function when the air conditioner is turned off, the blower works year-round, circulating warm air throughout your home in the winter months and cool air in the summer. Therefore, the blower unit tends to break down more often.

    Dirt

    • When an air conditioner rests idle during the winter months, dirt, dust and debris can gather inside. Therefore, it's a good idea to open up your air conditioner and clean it before turning it on in the summertime.

    Air Filter

    • Replace the air filter on your air conditioner for the new season. This will ensure the air conditioner continues to function throughout those long, hot days of summer.
