Does My Air Conditioner Need a Tune-Up?

How Long Since Previous

• If it has been more than one year since your last air conditioning maintenance check-up, then it is time for another one now. These tune-ups will ensure your system is primed for another season of cooling and will ensure you don't set yourself up for poor cooling or other unexpected repairs. If you have had a tune-up in the last year, but your system isn't cooling properly or you suspect another problem, having the servicing done again in hopes of fixing the problem is a good idea. Just let the technician know what your concerns are.

Window Units and Portables

• If you have a window air conditioner or a portable unit, then the tune-up procedures are something you can take care of without a professional. When the time comes for the annual tune-up, you can start by removing the air filter, vacuuming off the debris and replacing it. You may need to wash it in warm soapy water to thoroughly clean it. Vacuum the inside and outside coils of a window unit with a brush attachment. You may need to use a can of compressed air to blow dust and dirt from the inside of the unit after removing the cover. Make sure a window or through-the-wall type unit is sealed with weather stripping to maximize efficiency and make sure it is secure.

Central Air

• A central air conditioning system requires a check-up by a professional HVAC technician. The professional inspection and tune-up may include checking your thermostat for proper function, insulating or repairing ducts under the house and testing the refrigerant levels and basic operation of the unit. A seasonal check on the system will also include checking for debris around the intakes at the outside condenser unit, inspecting the coil for icing or dirt and grime and checking for blockages in the condensate drain pipes.

When to Schedule It

• The best time to schedule a tune-up for your air conditioner is before you need it. When people have problems with their air in the middle of summer, it can be like an emergency. HVAC professionals are the busiest doing repairs during this time, and they are far more available during the noncooling season. So, you'll get a faster appointment and you won't have to go without air during the dog days of summer.
