How to Troubleshoot a Mini-Split

Mini-splits are compact air conditioners that provide maximum cooling to a room and adjacent rooms. However, on occasion, problems can occur with the machine. It may not turn on as quickly as expected, or the output may not be as efficient as it once was. You can solve many issues when they appear by double-checking your settings, your setup and following a few maintenance tips.

Check that the power plug is securely plugged into the outlet if the air conditioner doesn't operate and then check that the timer or "Timer On" button is on. If it is, verify that the voltage is between 206V and 244V. Commonly, a stable voltage electrical current range of 220+10%, 1ph is required; otherwise, the compressor may vibrate excessively and damage the system. Switch the air conditioner to another outlet if this occurs or contact an electrician for advice on where best to install the unit.

Clean the air filters if the cooling or heating output isn't efficient. Many mini-splits have filters that can be easily removed by removing the front panel. Wipe the filters with a soft, clean cloth slightly moistened with water. Let filters air-dry completely before reinstalling. Refer to your product user manual to learn how to properly clean your particular model.

Reset the temperature or "Set Temperature" setting. Verify that the indoor fan speed isn't set too low. It's common for many mini-split units to work in "Heat" mode when the remote control is used to set the temperature to 20 degrees C. Set the temperature to "Cool" mode or at least 25 degrees C to deactivate "Heat" mode.

Remove additional heat or cooling sources in the room if the air conditioner still seems not to output heat or cool air as it should.

    • 5

Replace both batteries in the remote if it fails to work. Check that the distance between the remote and the air conditioner isn't out of range. Remove any obstructions that block the Infrared signal on the unit.

    • 6

Remove odor-causing items from the room if an odd smell seem to come from the air conditioner. The mini-split breathes in and blows odors in the surrounding air.
