Why Will My Air Conditioner Not Cut Off?

When your air conditioner unit fails to turn off automatically, it might seem like a malfunction when, more likely, it's a normal function of the air conditioner. The unit can be shut off with a setting adjustments and basic troubleshooting.
  1. Thermostat Setting

    • If the weather outside is very hot and the air conditioner thermostat is set to a low setting, then the internal compressor might seem to not turn off. In truth, the air conditioner is working extremely hard to adjust the room to the desired thermostat setting. If the thermostat is set very low, the air conditioner might take a long time to reach the designated temperature. Adjust the temperature setting to a higher number, such as 78 degrees Fahrenheit, if you want the unit's internal compressor to cut off every now and then. Press the up directional button on the remote control or on the unit's front panel to raise the thermostat.

    Fan Setting

    • If the unit runs but no cold air blows, the "Fan Only" setting might be enabled. If "Fan Only" or "Fan" is activated, the air conditioner won't cut off until you turn it off with the remote control or the front panel controls. Press the "Power" or "On/Off" button on the remote control or the front panel to turn the fan off. The fan will turn off and all indicator lights will go out.

    "Dry" Cycle

    • While the "Dry" cycle runs, the unit doesn't turn off. The "Dry" activates the unit's internal dehumidifier and removes humidity from the air. The process runs for an average of about 30 minutes before it shuts off automatically. If you wish to turn the "Dry" function off, press the "Dry" button again to cancel it.

    Power

    • If the air conditioner is unresponsive to the "Power" or "On/Off" button, the batteries in the remote control might be dead. Slide the battery cover off the back of the remote control and remove the batteries inside. Confirm that the battery chamber is free of dirt and grime. Reinsert two new batteries into the battery chamber according to the polar indicators printed on the inside of the chamber. If the unit is still unresponsive to the power-off commands, unplug the power cord from the power outlet on the wall to reset the connection. Wait three minutes and then plug the unit back in. Press the "Reset" button on the plug and turn the unit back on. If it still fails to cut off, contact the manufacturer for further assistance.
