How to Test an Air Conditioner's Fan Motor

An air conditioner is a unit that you can permanently install in the home or temporarily install in the wall or window. The unit blows cold air into a house or room to regulate the room air temperature during warm days of the year. Once the unit is installed, you might wish to monitor the functions of the air conditioner to confirm that it works correctly. The fan component of the air conditioner is essential, as no air can flow through the unit without a properly functioning fan.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "On/Off" button on the remote control or air conditioner control panel. The power indicator lights turn on and air might start to blow, depending on the settings when the unit was turned off.

    • 2

Operate the "Mode" button, on the unit's front panel or remote control, repeatedly, until the "Fan" indicator light illuminates. The air conditioner is now set to "Fan" mode. You will hear the air conditioner fan turning and room temperature is taken in through the grille and circulated out of the unit through the louvers or vents.

    • 3

Press the "Mode" button repeatedly, until the "Cool" indicator light is illuminated. The air conditioner now blows cold air. Adjust the thermostat to a low number, such as 60 degrees Fahrenheit, if the louvers fail to blow cold air. The compressor will kick in, if the room temperature is above 60 F, and cold air blows from the louvers.

    • 4

Activate the "Fan Speed" button on the remote control or the front panel to cycle through the different fan speeds. A "High" fan speed setting produces air emission at a fast rate. "Low" speed produces air emissions at a slow rate and "Medium" speed is in between fast and slow.

    • 5

Press the "Timer" button on the remote control or the front panel to activate the automatic shut-off timer. The set time appears in the display. Press the up or down directional buttons to raise or lower the time respectively in 30 minute increments. You can schedule a shut-off time for up to 24 hours in the future. Press the "Timer" button again, when the timer is set. When the designated time occurs, the fan and the unit shut off.

    • 6

Hit the "Dry" button on the unit's front panel, if the cycle is featured on the unit, to start the "Dry" cycle. The fan activates automatically along with the unit's internal dehumidifier and leeches moisture from the air. The cycle lasts approximately 30 minutes and then turns off. The fan speed can't be adjusted during the "Dry" cycle.
