The Typical User Interface of an Air Conditioner

A basic air conditioner (AC) unit features four to six simple buttons, several indicator lights and a small display on the user interface. Some units are equipped with a remote control that features the same amount of buttons, if not more. These buttons are used to control all functions of the air conditioner. Before you buy a unit, you'll want to learn what these buttons do.
  1. Power

    • Featured on the front panel of the air conditioner is the "Power," or "On/Off" button as well as the remote control if the unit comes supplied with one. Press the "Power" button to turn the unit on. If the unit was set to blow cool air before it was turned off previously, the unit will turn on and immediately blow air.

    Mode

    • The "Mode" button, located on the AC interface or remote control, allows you to access to multiple air conditioner modes, such as the "Cool," "Energy Saver," "Fan" and "Heat" functions. Press the "Mode" button repeatedly until the desired function's indicator light is illuminated on the interface. To activate the cold air function of the air conditioner, press the "Mode" button until you reach "Cool." The air conditioner will blow cold air.

    Temperature

    • With a press of the basic directional buttons on the interface, you can adjust the thermostat. Sometimes they aren't labeled on the remote control. The current thermostat setting appears in the air conditioner display. To change the thermostat setting, press the down directional button to make the room colder or the up directional button to make it warmer. The thermostat settings are only effective in the "Cool" or "Heat" mode. If the unit is set to "Fan Only," the thermostat has no effect on the air output.

    Fan Speed

    • Circulate the air in the room using the "Fan Only" function of the air conditioner. While the "Fan Only" feature functions without the cooling element, the fan runs with the cold air feature. If the mode is set to "Fan" or "Cool" and you want to increase the fan speed, press the "Fan Speed" button on the remote control or AC interface. Some units feature three fan speed settings, such as "High," "Medium" and "Low."

    Timer

    • You can set the AC timer feature up to 24 hours ahead of time to shut off the unit automatically. Activate the timer function by pressing the "Timer" button on the remote control or AC interface. The currently designated time appears on the interface display. Press the directional buttons to add or take away 30 minutes to or from the timer. When the shutoff time is set, press the "Timer" button to save the settings and enable the timer.
