The Installation of a Free Standing Air Conditioner

A free standing or portable air conditioner can be moved from room to room to regulate the air. An exhaust hose connects to the back of the unit and is essential to the functionality of the air conditioner. The unit itself requires no installation, but the accompanying exhaust hose must be installed to both the unit and to a window.
  1. Placement

    • The free standing air conditioner comes with an exhaust hose that must be hooked up to a window or a wall opening, so the air conditioner must be placed near a window. An ideal location is one that experiences temperatures that do not drop below 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the unit's cooling limits. Ensure that the unit is placed on a smooth, flat surface. Keep in mind that the bottom of most units feature casters to aid in ease of movement.

    Window Slider

    • Once the unit's location is selected, the window slider component must be installed in the window. The window slider fits in a small section made by a slightly open window. The exhaust hose from the free standing air conditioner fits into the window slider opening. The rest of the window slider blocks outside air from entering the room and inside air from escaping. Slide the window slider into the open window and shut the window sash down on top of it securely.

    Window Sealant and Locks

    • After the window slider is installed, you'll need to secure the window because the original window latch no longer lines up with the locking groove. The unit comes supplied with brackets that can be screwed into the metal siding of the window. Screw the brackets into the side of the window down on top of the open window to prevent opening. Lay down the supplied foam on the top of the window to block the passage of air between indoors and outdoors.

    Exhaust Hose to Unit

    • The exhaust hose is an important component to the free standing air conditioner as it allows evaporated air to move from the unit to outside. Some units fail to run without the exhaust hose. Screw the hose to the designated opening on the back of the air conditioner. Confirm that the grooves are properly aligned with the hose and that there are no gaps so that air can escape.

    Exhaust Hose To Window

    • The exhaust hose attaches to the installed window slider and can be removed. Screw the exhaust hose into the window slider opening. Confirm that the connection is sealed and that no air can escape.
