How to Construct a Home Irrigation Manifold

A home irrigation manifold is a set of one or more valves that have been joined to both control separate portions of the lawn system and allow the flow of water to reach all water valves. The valves can be connected to an irrigation controller and operated electronically. Plan the irrigation system and acquire the necessary parts, before you install the system. For example, consider building the irrigation system and a two-valve manifold out of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, pipe.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the pieces of the valve manifold in the order that you plan to assemble them.

    • 2

Wrap Teflon tape in the direction of the threads onto the threads of the fittings. Screw a fitting into each valve inlet, which is usually labeled with an arrow and the word "Flow." Screw one fitting into each valve outlet. Tighten all fittings with a wrench no more than a half-twist.

    • 3

Cut a 3-inch piece of PVC pipe with the pipe cutters.

    • 4

Sand down the edges of the 3-inch piece of PVC pipe so there are no rough edges. Sand down the edges of the PVC pipes you wish to connect to the valve manifold, such as the main irrigation pipeline and the sprinkler system pipes.

    • 5

Rub PVC primer into the inside of the valve fittings and onto the end of the 3-inch piece of PVC pipe. Rub PVC glue onto the outside of the 3-inch pipe and the inside of the inlet fittings.

    • 6

Insert the 3-inch pipe into the fittings between the two valves. Twist the pipe a quarter turn to situate the pipe into the fittings. Hold the fittings and the pipe in place for approximately 20 seconds, until the glue is dry. This is the valve manifold. You can add more valves onto the valve manifold in the future.

    • 7

Rub primer and glue onto the end of the main irrigation line pipe and slide it into the side opening of the valve manifold. Twist the pipe a quarter turn to settle it and hold it in place for 20 seconds.

    • 8

Rub primer and glue onto the two sprinkler zone pipes. Slide the two sprinkler zone pipes into the valve outlets, twist them a quarter turn and hold them in place for 20 seconds.
