How Should a Portable Air Conditioner Be Installed?

A portable air conditioner sits on the floor and cools the air of any room with the use of a power outlet and a window. You might think that, because the unit is portable, it requires little to no installation. In some ways, a portable air conditioner is just as complex to install as a window unit air conditioner.
  1. Location

    • A portable air conditioner can be placed anywhere in the home or office to cool the air within the area. There are only three stipulations: the supplied exhaust hose must connect to a nearby window, the power cord must connect to a nearby power outlet and the temperature of the space must not get colder than 65 degrees Fahrenheit, or the lower limit of the portable air conditioner's thermostat. The unit can move via the four casters on the bottom of the unit or with the handle on the top of the unit.

    Window

    • The nearby window, to which the exhaust hose connects, requires the most preparation in the way of installation. A window slider must be installed in the bottom part of the window between the sill and the sash. The window slider features a hole to which the exhaust hose connects. The rest of the slider is sealed to prevent the passage of air. Insert the window slider onto the sill and lower the sash on top of the slider to secure it into place. After the slider install, you must secure the window by installing a bracket on the top of the open window in both corners. After the brackets are inserted, plug up any openings, such as on the top of the open window, with the supplied foam sealant strip.

    Exhaust Hose

    • The exhaust hose is important, as it allows evaporated air and exhaust to travel from the unit outside. If the unit is unable to expel this air, the unit stops running or stops blowing cold air. After the window slider is installed, one of the hose ends must be attached to the appropriate opening on the back of the unit. The hose end commonly screws onto the back as well as to the window slider opening. Confirm that there are no openings through which air could escape. Straighten out the exhaust as much as possible to avoid blockage.

    Power

    • The portable air conditioner requires a regular, properly functioning power outlet. Plug the power cord of the portable air conditioner into the nearby power outlet, turn the unit on and test it.
