No Power in My Air Conditioner After a Thunderstorm

During a harsh thunderstorm, lightning might strike or damage might occur, causing your home to lose power. When the power comes back on, there are a few safety devices which are tied to your air conditioner that might trip and prevent the unit from turning back on.
  1. Power

    • When the power is restored to the home following a storm, the unit might not turn on and revert back to its previous settings before the power went out. If your unit features a controller dial, verify that the dial isn't set to "Off." If the unit was running before the power went out, the settings should be reinstated once the power turns back in some models. Some models might prevent the unit from powering back on immediately after power is restored. You should first try to turn the unit on by pressing the "Power" or "On/Off" button on the remote control or user interface on the unit. If the unit fails to power on, the breaker might have been tripped.

    Breaker

    • The area of the house that contains the power outlet to power your air conditioner is under the control of a breaker. Breakers prevent power surges from damaging the home and are located in a breaker box, which is located somewhere in the interior of the home. During a storm, the power might go out. When power is restored, the breaker might get tripped, thus preventing the air conditioner from powering back on. Observe the state of the air conditioner breaker switch. If the switch is set to "Off" or is in the middle position, the breaker is off and was most likely tripped. Flip the switch over to "On," and try turning on the unit.

    Plug

    • If the unit still fails to turn on, the internal surge protector device inside of the air conditioner plug might have been tripped. Before pressing the "Reset" button, unplug the plug for a few seconds and then plug it in to reset the connection. Press the "Reset" button on the plug. It should click in slightly and remain compressed. Press the "Power" button on the unit. If the button fails to stay depressed after you push it, the plug might be damaged, which will require the help of a technician.

    Compressor

    • After the unit is activated, the fan might run, but the compressor doesn't. The compressor features a built-in safety mechanism called the compressor overload, which prevents the compressor from running for three minutes after the unit has been reset. Allow three minutes to pass before the compressor turns on.
