Air Conditioner That Fits Casement Windows

Casement windows are two separate panes that swing open rather than a single pane that slides open. Before you buy a portable air conditioner with a casement window component, you might have questions about how to properly set up a portable unit using the part.
  1. Unit Setup

    • The portable unit is a rectangular air conditioner that sits vertically on the floor. Each unit comes with an exhaust hose that must be installed onto the back of the unit and to a window when the unit is running a cooling or drying cycle. The unit itself is not installed in a window. When the cooling or dehumidifying function is selected on the air conditioner interface, moisture in the air is sucked into the unit, evaporated and evacuated out of the exhaust hose to the outside air. The unit features four casters on the bottom and one or more handles near the top for ease of transportation. Some units support a casement window installation and come with a flat exhaust hose end or casement component that fits into a thin window space.

    Unit Install

    • On the back of the portable unit is a small hole the diameter of the exhaust hose. This hole might be sealed with a cap to keep dirt out of the unit during transportation. Remove the cap, line up the grooves on the hose to the hole and twist the exhaust hose onto the unit. Confirm that the attachment is secure with no gaps. If the connection is lopsided and not flush, the hose might leak during air conditioner operation, which could cause the unit to shut off. The other end of the hose will be fitted into the casement window with the casement window component.

    Window Install

    • You can install the casement window attachment easily, without using screws or nails. The casement component attaches to the end of the exhaust hose. After you open one of the casement windows, slide the flat casement component into the space between the open casement window and the closed casement window vertically, so that the window is cracked just enough to accommodate the casement hose component. Straighten out the hose as much as possible. If the hose becomes kinked or bent too much, the unit fails to operate.

    Secure Window

    • Tie a string or rope around the handles of the two windows to keep the component in place and to keep the windows closed. If necessary, fill the gaps of the windows with weather seal. Weather seal comes in a roll and might feature paper on the sticky side, which needs to be peeled off. After the paper is pealed off, press strips of the weather seal against any openings in the window, until the window is completely sealed, preventing cold air from leaking out of the room.
