How to Control the Power on an Air Conditioner Unit

Air conditioner units feature various stages of power control, from the internal compressor to the breaker box that controls different sections of the home. Controlling power to your air conditioner is a simple matter of pushing the right button. But assuming you do that and your air conditioner fails to turn on, you should do some quick reconnaissance to determine whether there's been a basic oversight or there's a need to call a technician. Electrical safety devices exist within the unit to prevent damage from electrical surges caused by lightning strikes and power outages, and your problem may be no greater than resetting a surge device.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "On/Off" or "Power" button on the air conditioner unit interface, which is located on the right or left side of the unit, or the remote control to turn the unit on. Press the "On/Off" or "Power" button on the air conditioner interface or remote control to turn the unit off.

Ensure that the air conditioner power cord is properly plugged into the proper power outlet for your type of air conditioner unit. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet if you wish to terminate the power connection between your home and the air conditioner.

    • 3

Press the "Reset" button on the air conditioner power cord plug, if the your experienced a power outage and the unit won't turn back on. The plug's power surge protector might have tripped when the surge occurred or when the power came back on, preventing the unit from receiving power. After pressing in the "Reset" button, turn on the air conditioner.

Locate the breaker box in your home, if the unit fails to turn on from the "Power" button or after the unit was reset. Open the breaker box and locate the breaker that's in charge of the air conditioner outlet. The breaker may or may not be labeled. If the switch is in the middle position or the "Off" position, then the breaker might have been tripped during the power outage. Flip the switch back over to the "On" position and turn the unit on.

Press the down directional button on the remote control or the air conditioner interface to activate the internal compressor. The compressor powers the cooling elements but doesn't turn on unless the thermostat requirement is less than room temperature. Allow three minutes for the compressor to kick in if you've just turned the unit on after a power outage or if you pressed the plug's "Reset" button.

Turn the remote control over, press down on the battery cover with your fingers and slide the cover off. Insert the required batteries into the battery chamber, according to the unit's instruction manual, to power the remote control. Press the buttons on the remote control to send commands to the air conditioner.
