What Is a Window Wall-Mounted Air Conditioner?

A window or wall unit air conditioner is shaped like a slightly rectangular box, is heavy and fits into an equally large window or wall opening. The unit regulates the air within a room, circulates the air within the room or simply vents the air from the room. Before you purchase a unit, you might have questions about how to install it, how to use it and how to take care of it.
  1. Purpose

    • The unit is used to cool rooms during warm summer days or to circulate air throughout the room. If you like, you can uninstall the room and store it during cold winter months. A window unit air conditioner indirectly dries out the air, so if you want to use the unit to dehumidify the room somewhat, it can fulfill that purpose. A compact unit such as this is good for people who move a lot, who live in apartments with no central air conditioning or who wish to store their unit when it's not in use.

    Installation

    • Walls and windows are both equally suitable places to install a window/wall air conditioner. Some units feature a metal frame, which can be detached from the unit and installed in the window or wall before the unit is added as the final step. An any event, the back of the unit must be positioned outside of the home, while the front of the unit remains inside. Basically, the unit is half inside of the home and half outside of the home. Upon installation, the unit must be secured to the wall or window frame to prevent it from falling out of the window. After installation, you should seal any openings around the unit to prevent air from escaping.

    Operation

    • The user interface includes a "Mode" button, "Fan Speed" button, "Timer" button and directional buttons. The "Mode" button allows the user to cycle through the different modes, which includes functions like "Fan," "Cool" and "Heat." The directional buttons are used to adjust the thermostat level, which appears in the interface display. Some units come with a remote control, which feature the some of the same buttons.

    Maintenance

    • A window or wall air conditioner unit features an air filter behind the front grille. The filter is in place to block impurities from entering the unit and damaging it. The filter needs to be cleaned approximately twice a month. You can open the grille by pulling it open with your hand. The filter sits snugly inside and also can be removed by hand. Warm water on both sides of the filter will flush away all dirt and debris. The filter needs to be dry before it's inserted back into the unit.
