My Air Conditioner Blower Is Not Working

Sitting by a stunted air conditioner in the dead of summer is no way to keep cool. While the cooling element inside of the air conditioner functions, the air conditioner is useless without the internal fan to blow the cool air out of the unit. You might want to inspect a couple of things before calling a technician.
  1. Ice

    • During cold outdoor climates, ice buildup on the cooling element might have blocked the fan, making rotating impossible, which should be fixed as soon as possible as the fan motor could burn up under the stress. If the fan doesn't turn, the unit should be turned off to defrost. Unplug the unit as well to avoid any electrical problems. After the unit is allowed approximately 1 hour to fully thaw, it can be plugged back in and turned on. If the fan still fails to turn, the fan is broken and might have been the cause of the unit freezing over to begin with. The manufacturer or a technician should be called to fix the fan.

    Debris

    • If the unit sucks in a piece of debris, such as a strap or a plastic bag, the debris might have entangled itself with the fan, preventing the fan from turning. After the air conditioner fan motor is turned off, you can remove panels or outside components of the air conditioner to get to the fan. If you see debris or any kind of blockage, remove it. If the unit has frozen because of the fan problem, allow it time to thaw and then turn the unit back on. The fan should work normally, but if it doesn't, you should call a technician.

    Dirty Air Filter

    • An extraordinarily dirty or blocked air filter prevents air from being sucked into the unit, thus preventing air from blowing from the unit. If the unit is allowed to run with a blocked air filter, internal damage might occur. Some filters can be removed, washed and reinserted whereas others are meant to be replaced. If your air conditioner features a reusable air filter, running warm water over both sides will clean it. Before reinserting it into the unit, the filter should be completely dry.

    Power Outage

    • If the fan or entire unit fails to turn on, a power reset might correct the problem. A power reset can be achieved in a few different ways. The unit can simply be unplugged for approximately 10 seconds and plugged back in, the breaker can be switched off and on or the "Reset" button on the plug can be pressed.
