Troubleshooting a Danby Portable A/C

During those hot and muggy months, Danby portable air conditioning units such as the DAC10010E, DAC12010E and DAC8010E models can turn uncomfortable hot indoor temperatures into a comfortable environment. However, several problems related to dirty air filters, circuit breaker problems and loose parts can diminish performance. Before calling an appliance technician, a few troubleshooting steps may not only improve your unit's cooling efficiency, but promote longevity. Inspect and solve common problems safely.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the power connection if your air conditioner isn't working. Check the circuit breakers in your home and turn them on if they are off or tripped. They are usually located in the basement or electrical room. Set the "SELECTOR SWITCH" to any position other than "OFF" if your unit still isn't turning on. Press the "RESET" button on your power cord if the unit is still off.

    • 2

Turn off your air conditioner if it's not cooling efficiently. Wait at least five minutes, and then locate the air filter behind the air intake front grille. Grasp the sides of the front grille and pull it forward to open the filter compartment. Remove the filter. Attach a soft brush to your vacuum cleaner and vacuum the air filter. If it's still dirty, wash it in lukewarm soapy water, and then rinse it. Allow the filter to dry, and then reinsert it into its compartment.

Inspect your air conditioner for loose bolts and parts if it's making noise. Using a screwdriver tighten loose bolts and screws.

    • 4

Place an algaecide tablet inside the base pan if you smell foul, mildew-like odors.

    • 5

Check the air conditioner's setup if water is dripping inside the unit. Water dripping outside is a normal occurrence during hot and humid weather, so don't be concerned if you see condensation run-off on your unit. Check the installation and make sure the unit is angled properly. For example, adjust the setup and make proper adjustments if the air conditioner isn't at least 30 inches above the floor. Setup steps may vary with different Danby Portable ACs, so refer to your manual.

Remove the filter and clean it if you see ice or frost buildup. Occasionally, frost may develop on the unit if the temperature is approximately 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Set the "SELECTOR SWITCH" to "FAN" mode until frost melts.
