How to Use Compressed Air to Clean a Home AC Condenser

An air conditioner condenser, whether it is a central or window unit, has ribbed fins along the back or sides to direct air flow into the unit for cooling. Because this component is outdoors and exposed to the elements, dirt and debris can accumulate between the steel plates and clog the system, causing the unit to work harder. This can shorten the life span of the unit. The condenser fins on air conditioner units are sharp and made of thin steel, so you do not want to touch them when cleaning. Instead, use compressed air to blast away the dirt.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the air conditioner unit at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

    • 2

Spray HVAC foaming cleaner onto the condenser fins and into the crevices between them. Let the cleaner soak on the unit for the time recommended on the package.

    • 3

Adjust the nozzle on the end of the air-tank hose to its narrowest point for a concentrated stream of air.

    • 4

Hold the nozzle of the hose of the compressed air tank an inch from the vertical condenser fins while wearing work gloves and safety goggles.

    • 5

Blast compressed air into the grooves in the condenser, working up and down, left to right, to remove dirt, leaves and grass clippings that can clog the unit and restrict air flow.

    • 6

Restore power to the air conditioner unit at the circuit breaker or fuse box when finished.
