How to Install a Torro Lawn Sprinkler System

A Toro sprinkler system is buried underground and pops up to water the lawn when activated by hand or a controller. Some Toro sprinklers rotate up to 360 degrees, while other models are stationary and pop up to spray only in the direction in which it was installed. The sprinkler system is controlled by water valves that stem from the irrigation line. Before you install your system, draw up a plan of where you want to install Toro sprinklers and pipes. Divide the lawn up into sections and determine which sprinkler models to purchase. For example, consider installing a Toro sprinkler system using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes and fittings.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig trenches in the places where you plan to install pipes and sprinklers by hand. Lay out the pipes, fittings, pipe assemblies and sprinkler housings beside the trenches.

    • 2

Sand down the ends of each PVC pipe to remove rough edges.

    • 3

Wrap Teflon tape around the necessary number of fittings required for each water valve outlet in the direction of the threads. Screw one fitting into each valve outlet and tighten them with a wrench no more than one full turn.

    • 4

Wipe PVC primer on the inside of the outlet fittings and on the ends of the zone pipes that will lead to each valve's respective zone. Wipe PVC glue inside of the outlet fittings and the zone pipe ends and insert the pipe ends into the outlet fittings. Twist each connection a quarter turn to settle it and hold them in place until they dry.

    • 5

Prime and glue all pipes and fittings of the Toro sprinkler system together, one at a time. This includes inserting the pipes into the fittings, until the whole system is put together according to plan, except for the swing pipe assemblies and the Toro sprinkler housings.

    • 6

Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of each swing pipe assembly end in the direction of the threads. Screw each swing pipe assembly into the fittings along the Toro irrigation line, until each assembly is attached. Tighten the assemblies by hand.

    • 7

Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of each Toro sprinkler housing in the direction of the threads and then screw each housing into the open end of each swing pipe assembly. If the Toro sprinklers are rotary sprinklers, angle the fixed side of the sprinkler with the corresponding fixed side of its watering area before burial. The fixed side of the sprinkler can't be adjusted in terms of rotation.

Cover each trench with dirt and grass, until the system is hidden. Confirm that the sprinkler housings are vertically buried and that the spray heads are level to the ground and uncovered.
