How to Wire a Hunter Thermostat 40170

The Hunter 40170 thermostat is a simple electronic thermostat with mechanical temperature and on-off controls. You can use it to set the temperature in your home during both heating and cooling season. One unit controls both your furnace and your air conditioner, and the 40170 is compatible with most common heaters and air conditioners. Hunter provides labels with this thermostat to help you properly organize your thermostat wires and know how to connect them. This makes the Hunter 40170 thermostat very simple to wire.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power switches of your furnace and air conditioner. Turn off the circuit breakers that control both devices, if possible.

    • 2

Snap off or unscrew the cover of your existing thermostat. Remove the back plate as well if you are unable to access your thermostat wires and your thermostat wire terminals.

    • 3

Remove each wire from its terminal and label it with its proper Hunter label. Label the RH, R, VR or 4 terminal wire with the RH sticker, the RC or VC wire with the RC sticker, the Y, C or M wire with the Y label, the W or H wire with the W label, the G or F wire with the G label, the O wire with the O label and the B wire with the B label. Do not label the C wire if you have both a C and a Y or M wire.

    • 4

Remove any remaining parts of your old thermostat.

    • 5

Secure the wires to the wall with tape or bend them over the gap in the wall so they do not slip back behind the wall. If you have a C wire as well as a Y or M wire, you can tape the end of the C wire and slip it behind the wall as it is not necessary for this thermostat.

    • 6

Pull the top cover of your Hunter 40170 off from its back plate by holding each piece in one hand and pulling them apart.

    • 7

Place the back plate of your new thermostat against the wall. Pull the labeled wires through the opening in the back plate. Skip to Step 8 if the mounting holes of your Hunter 40170 line up with the mounting holes from your old thermostat.

    • 8

Level the thermostat back plate by lining it up against a spirit or electronic level until the spirit level bubble is in the center of the level or until the electronic level indicates the thermostat is straight. Mark the position of the two mounting holes at each side of the back plate. Set the back plate aside and drill 3/16-inch mounting holes. Insert a provided anchor in each hole and tap it gently into each hole. Place the thermostat back plate against the wall so that its mounting holes line up with the anchors.

    • 9

Secure the back plate of the thermostat to your wall with the provided mounting screws. Tighten them with a screwdriver.

    • 10

Loosen each of the seven terminal screws that corresponds to the label on one of your wires. Insert each wire into the black terminal shield behind the terminal screw that corresponds to its label. Tighten each screw after you insert a wire.

    • 11

Remove the jumper between the RH and RC terminals if you have both an RH and RC wire. Leave it in and make sure it does not fall out if you have only one of those two wires for your system.

    • 12

Push any excess wire behind the wall so that it does not get in the way.

    • 13

Set the "HE/HG" switch on the wall plate to "HG" for gas or oil heat and "HE" for electric furnaces. Set the "HP/STD" switch to "HP" if you have a single-stage heat pump or to "STD" if you have a regular system.

    • 14

Insert two fresh alkaline or lithium "AA" cells according to the polarity marked for each battery holder in the wall plate. Snap the cover back onto the back plate of your Hunter 40170. Restore power to your furnace and air conditioner. Set your thermostat as desired.
