How to Charge an R22

R22 is a refrigerant commonly used in home air-conditioning units. If the R22 in your air conditioner is running low, your AC unit will stop cooling your home. As a warning, R22 is extremely toxic and should be handled with care. Gloves should be worn at all times when you charge your air conditioner with R22 gas.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the R22 gas container to your manifold gauge.

    • 2

Connect the manifold gauge to your air-conditioning unit. Make sure the compressor is running before you attempt to charge it.

    • 3

Consult the instruction booklet of your air conditioner to find out the psi (pounds per square inch) for a full charge. A full charge for a 1 horsepower air conditioner is between 60 and 70 psi.

    • 4

Turn the valve on the left of the manifold gauge to the left. This will begin refilling your air conditioner with R22.

    • 5

Monitor the gauge on the right. When the reading reaches the psi limit found in the instruction book, turn the left valve all the way to the right. Your air conditioner is now fully charged with R22.
