How to Install a Polar Cub Air Conditioner

The Coleman Polar Cub air conditioner installs into any recreational vehicle ceiling and acts to cool the vehicle during warm summer months. Some recreational vehicles come with standard roof vents in the ceiling. This roof vent can be removed to install the air conditioner unit. All that is required for the installation of the Polar Cub is a ceiling opening between the sizes of 14-by-14 inches and 15-by-15 inches. If the vehicle has no removable roof vents, a hole can be created.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a screwdriver into the roof vent screws inside the recreational vehicle. Unscrew the screws and remove the roof vent, all sealing or trimming materials and caulk from the opening. If there are roof vent mounting holes in the room that won’t be covered by the air conditioner, fill the holes with sealant to prevent leaks.

    • 2

Place the top part of the air conditioner unit on top of the roof with the Polar Cub nose facing the front of the recreational vehicle. Without scraping the unit along the roof, settle the rooftop unit mount gasket directly over the roof opening. Pull the wires from the underside of the Polar Cub down into the cabin.

    • 3

Insert the four supplied mounting bolts into the bolt holes at each corner of the gasket on the rooftop unit bottom. Insert the ceiling assembly mount frame onto the bolt ends and screw the nuts onto the bolts to secure the assembly mount frame onto the Polar Cub rooftop unit.

    • 4

Pull the grille and the filter from the ceiling assembly or lower Polar Cub air conditioner component.

    • 5

Slip the duct collar onto the base pan of the lower component, insert the supplied screws and fasten the collar down.

    • 6

Plug the electrical conduit wire from the rooftop component into the nine-position receptacle on the thermostat side of the lower component. Slip 6 inches of the power supply wire through the cable clamp and wiring box of the nine-position receptacle. Tighten the clamp so the cable doesn’t move.

    • 7

Twist together the power supply wires to the white and black wires from the Polar Cub. Twist the ground wire to the green wire. Twist the supplied wire nuts on top of each connection until they’re tight.

    • 8

Gather all excess wires and tuck them inside the control box. Press the thermostat cover over the control box until it snaps into place.

    • 9

Raise the lower component to the rooftop component. Insert the four supplied shoulder screws into each corner of the lower component and screw them into the mounting frame so the lower component is fastened to the ceiling. Confirm that the fabric duct is pulled down correctly into the discharge opening. Pull the back from the discharge opening and press the fabric duct to the opening.

    • 10

Insert the filter back into the lower component and replace the grille.
