How to Hook Up a Window Unit in the Attic

A window unit air conditioner can be installed in an attic just as it can in a downstairs room, as long as two requirements are met. There must be a window or an opening large enough to mount the unit and a power outlet capable of supporting the requirements of the window unit. If there is no window, a hole can be cut to accommodate the window unit. A window unit is ineffective if not exhausted to the outside.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws holding the air conditioner unit from the cabinet. Remove the cabinet and set the unit aside.

    • 2

Place the top rail on the top of the cabinet and align the holes in the top rail with the holes on the cabinet. Insert the supplied screws into the holes and screw them in with a screwdriver.

    • 3

Insert the right and left accordion panel bars into the top and bottom guard rail slots on the right and left sides of the air conditioner cabinet. If your unit features panel connection holes on the sides, insert the supplied accordion panel screws into the cabinet through the panels and screw them in, until the panels are secured on both sides.

    • 4

Open the designated attic window and measure the length of the windowsill and sash. Cut strips of the supplied weather seal the same lengths as the sash and sill. Peel the backs off the weather seal and press them to the sill and sash.

    • 5

Insert the air cabinet into the attic window, so that the bottom rail sits on the inside of the frame. Pull the window down into the groove of the top rail to prevent the cabinet from falling out of the window.

    • 6

Lower a V-support bracket down through the back of the cabinet, align it with the mounting holes on the bottom left of the unit, insert the supplied screws through the inside of the unit into the V-support bracket and screw them in with the screwdriver. Screw the supplied bolt into the outer attic wall through the point of the V-support bracket. Repeat this process for the right side.

    • 7

Pull the accordion panels out from each side, until they cover the open window space. Insert the supplied screws through the holes of the panels and screw them into the attic window frame.

    • 8

Place the supplied L brackets on the top of the open window, one side backed against the frame and the other face down on top of the open window. Screw the L brackets into the side of the frame. This keeps anyone from opening the window from the outside.

Insert the air conditioner back into the cabinet and replace the screws.
