My Two-Stage Air Conditioner Runs Constantly

A two-stage air conditioner gradually increases the cooling power of the unit upon startup until it reaches the desired thermostat setting. Before it turns off, it reduces its cooling power so that the shut-off point isn’t so abrupt as it occurs. If the unit is stuck or running constantly, the fix might be a simple one or one that requires the help of a technician.
  1. Thermostat

    • If the day is particularly hot and the thermostat is set to a low temperature, the two-stage air conditioner normally will run continuously. The unit works harder against the heat to maintain a cool temperature, especially since the two-stage unit eases in and out of its temperature goal, as opposed to a single stage unit, which reaches its goal at one speed and then shuts off. To keep the unit from running frequently during the warm parts of the year, you can raise the thermostat to a higher level.

    Wiring

    • Incorrect wiring along the two-stage unit’s power lines to the circuit breaker could cause the unit to run and not turn off even if the power switch is set to “Off.” Not only can the unit continue to run, but the appliance also could be damaged and the user could receive an electric shock. The two-stage air conditioner circuit breaker should be shut off to stop the flow of electricity to the unit, and an electrician should be contacted to examine the wiring.

    Leaks

    • Openings and cracks within the home provide a perfect escape route for cold air, which is blown into the home from the two-stage central air conditioner unit. All floor vents, outside doors or windows should be closed or sealed while the air conditioner runs. If air leaks out of the home, the unit will continue to run as it tries fruitlessly to meet the thermostat setting. The home should be inspected for possible openings. Once these openings are properly sealed, the home cools adequately, causing the unit to take breaks and shut off as it’s designed to do.

    Blockage

    • The two-stage air conditioner thermostat is connected to a sensor inside of the home, which determines when the thermostat’s set temperature is met. If chairs, drapes or other pieces of furniture block the outlet vents, cold air is unable to enter the room and reach the sensor, so the air conditioner continues to run. All furniture should be removed from intake grilles and outlet vents.
