How to Scrap an Air Condenser

Air conditioners have several components: an evaporator, compressor, fan, motor and a condenser. Each of these components work together to convert gas to a liquid, which circulates through coils. The coils are fanned, causing cold air to be forced through the duct work. After years of use, one or more of these components will likely break down and need to be replaced. That can leave a homeowner with an old condenser. Although you can't discard the condenser in your curbside trash, you can recycle it -- and get paid.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether your old air conditioner condenser can be repaired for reuse. Ask the air conditioner repair technician that serviced the AC if the component can be refurbished and used again.

    • 2

Phone a local air conditioning repair service and ask where they scrap old air conditioner parts gathered from other customers.

    • 3

Contact several scrap yards and ask for their going rates for buying air conditioner condensers. Compare those rates and the distances to drive to each scrap yard. Determine which is closest, and pays the most competitive rates.

    • 4

Deliver your old condenser to the scrap yard that is nearest your home, and pays a competitive rate. The scrap yard will accept your old condenser and pay you.
