Pick an Energy Star rated air conditioning unit because it will run more efficiently all day and cost less to operate.
Remove your air conditioner from its packaging. Check to see whether the outlet you will use has other appliances plugged into it. If possible, move those appliances to another outlet.
Close any heating or cooling vents in the room to lock in the cooler air from your air conditioner.
Open a window and place the air conditioning unit level on the window. The condensation will be able to drip outside if the unit is flat.
Assemble the side panel kit that came with the air conditioning unit. Following the manufacturer's specific instructions, attach the side panels to the unit on either side and then expand and attach them to the window sill so a seal is formed.
Measure and saw two wooden blocks the height of the distance between your window frame and the top of your window. The blocks will lock the window in place so no one can disturb the unit or gain access to the house.
Tape foil tape around the edge of the air conditioning unit and connecting to your window to create an air tight seal.
Set the air conditioning unit to the desired temperature and leave it on. The unit will adjust to the temperature in the room and keep you cool and comfortable.
