How to Install Line Sets in a Mini-Split System

Many homeowners rely on air-conditioning during the hot months for a comfortable interior. However, some homes do not have a duct system for moving the cooled air to individual rooms. As a solution, mini-split systems have been devised to cool a particular room without the need for ducts. A mini-split system uses both interior and exterior devices for creating cooled air. The line sets between the two devices must be arranged and connected in a specific orientation for a properly functioning air-conditioning system.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that the indoor and outdoor units are installed in their permanent locations. Make sure that both units have proper spacing surrounding them for ventilation.

    • 2

Lubricate the refrigerant and drain line set ends that enter the indoor unit with refrigerating oil.

    • 3

Connect the refrigerant and drain lines to the indoor unit's rear ports. Confirm that the refrigerant line is installed above the drain line.

    • 4

Tighten the connecting nuts with a spanner tool. Refer to the mini-split system owner's manual for the specific torque values.

    • 5

Secure the two line sets with a binding belt. This will ensure that the line sets will not accidentally pull away from their connection point.

    • 6

Snake the line sets through the home and out to the outdoor unit. Lubricate the ends that enter the outdoor unit with refrigerating oil. Connect the line sets by following Steps 3 and 4 again.

    • 7

Test the mini-split system. The indoor unit should produce consistent cool air for the room.
