What Is the Purpose of an Air Conditioner Sleeve?

A window air conditioner sleeve or case serves many purposes in the installation and removal of an air conditioner unit. Besides acting as a protective barrier, the sleeve makes maintenance of the unit easy. The unit can be removed from the sleeve without having to uninstall and reinstall the entire air conditioner unit.
  1. Installation

    • An air conditioner sleeve or cabinet makes installation of a window air conditioner unit safer. Screws can be unscrewed from the sleeve to release the enclosed air conditioner unit. The sleeve can be removed from the outside of the unit and installed in the window by itself. After the installation of the sleeve, the air conditioner unit can be safely inserted and fastened to the inside of the sleeve. Without the heavy weight of the air conditioner unit to contend with, installation of the sleeve is hassle free.

    Security

    • A detachable air conditioner sleeve or cabinet can be securely installed to prevent the unit from falling backwards out of the window. If the unit should fall out of the back of the window, it could cause harm to others and damage the air conditioner unit. The sleeve allows for the correct installation of V-support brackets onto the bottom of the unit and through the outside wall. These support brackets can be easily attached through the open bottom of the sleeve without the unit. Further security includes the installation of L brackets onto the top of the open window and the sides of the sleeve.

    Protection

    • Proper installation of the sleeve prevents the unit from being removed from the window. If the unit is removed from the window, theft could occur. Some sleeves feature extra protective metal components that wrap around the back of the unit. This extra material prevents the exhaust vents from being dented or tampered with. The metal cabinet also helps to guard against rain and other elements, such as falling tree branches.

    Removal

    • Should your air conditioner unit require a cleaning or repair, the unit can be removed without much fanfare from the sleeve. You can choose to leave the unit inserted in the sleeve without screws to secure it, or sleeve screws can be screwed into the side of the sleeve and into the mounting holes of the unit to secure the unit to the sleeve. After the screws are removed the unit lifts right out of the sleeve, can be cleaned or repaired.
