DIY Air Conditioner Sleeve Installation

An air conditioner with a sleeve is safer to install than one without. Because the air conditioning unit is so heavy, there is always a risk of dropping it backward out of the window during installation. With the sleeved unit, you can remove the air conditioner from the sleeve and install only the lightweight sleeve first. After the proper installation of the sleeve, you can reinsert the air conditioner unit into the sleeve. You then use the V-support brackets, L-brackets, screws and weather seal strips that come supplied with the unit to complete the installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the front cover off the unit and set it aside.

    • 2

Insert a screwdriver into the screws on the side of the cabinet or sleeve and unscrew them. Set them aside for later use.

    • 3

Pull the lower lip of the air conditioner unit from inside the metal sleeve and pull the unit toward you. Pull the unit out of the sleeve completely and set it aside.

    • 4

Open the window into which you wish to install the unit, and set the sleeve on the sill with the front of the sleeve facing inside. Settle the sleeve's bottom guard rail on the outside of the sill. Close the open window down into the top guard rail, until the sleeve sits fixed in the window frame.

Lower a V-support bracket down through the bottom of the sleeve and butt the flat side up against one side of the unit's bottom. Insert the supplied bolts through the holes on the inside bottom of the unit and through the holes of the flat side of the V-support bracket. Screw the supplied nuts onto the bolts of the support bracket. Screw bolts through the bracket point holes or lowest spots of the brackets into the outside wall. Repeat this step for the other side of the sleeve.

Place an L-bracket on the topside of the open window. Butt one side up against the window frame and the other flat against the top of the open window. Screw a starter hole through the L-bracket and into the window frame. Put a screw through the L-bracket and screw it into the wall. Repeat this step for the other side of the window. This prevents the window from being opened.

Pick up the air conditioner unit and insert it into the secured sleeve. Replace the front cover onto the front of the unit. Insert the sleeve screws back into the sleeve and screw them in.
