Why Does My White Westinghouse Air Conditioner Blow Hot Air?

White Westinghouse air conditioners can blow hot air under different circumstances, some of which are part of the normal function of the unit, while others could be an indication of a more serious problem. Unplug the unit or turn off the electrical flow to the unit to reset the connection before you investigate.
  1. Thermostat Setting

    • A white Westinghouse air conditioner might blow warm or hot air if the thermostat is set too high. You can adjust the thermostat to a temperature that is lower than room temperature to allow the internal compressor to kick in. The internal compressor activates the cooling coils, which allow cold air to blow into the room. When you lower the thermostat to a temperature below room temperature and the compressor kicks in but blows warm air, the cooling coils and air filter might be dirty and require cleaning.

    Compressor

    • If the Westinghouse air conditioner’s internal compressor fails to turn on when activated, the fan may continue to blow warm air into the home. The compressor can fail for several reasons. A problem might exist with the compressor’s electricity supply connection or the thermostat. If the thermostat is disconnected from the compressor or malfunctions, the compressor fails to turn on along with the fan when the temperature rises above the set temperatures. Lower the thermostat setting to below the room temperature, and listen for the compressor and fan to kick in to test the thermostat. If the compressor fails to kick in, call a technician to fix or replace the thermostat.

    Temperature Limits

    • All Westinghouse air conditioners have a cooling limit of approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the thermostat limit is reached, the air that blows from the vents is no cooler than the temperature limit. If the room temperature is lower than the thermostat limit, then the air blowing from the vents is going to be warmer than room temperature. Once room temperature rises above the lowest thermostat setting, the compressor will kick in and cold air blows from the air conditioner.

    Mode

    • Westinghouse air conditioners feature different mode settings including “Fan” and “Cool.” You can run the fan without the compressor. When run alone, the fan component simply circulates the air within the room. If the air being blown from the air conditioner vents is warm, then the compressor might not be turned on, meaning the air conditioner could be set to “Fan.”
