Measure the length and height of the window where the air conditioner will be connected. Check the size of the air conditioner to ensure it will fit. You should not have any trouble fitting a standard air conditioner into a traditional window; but if your windows are small or oddly-shaped, there could be a problem.
Set the air conditioner out on the floor and extend the sides as far as they will go. Measure the entire length of the air conditioner to ensure that the unit with the sides extended will cover the entire length of the window. Purchase longer side protectors for the air conditioner if the window is too long for the current ones.
Install the air conditioner filter if it has not already been pre-installed. Close the filter cover.
Place a sturdy stand or table right next to the window where you plan to connect the air conditioner. Carefully set the air conditioner down on the table. Cover the table with a towel to protect it from scratches.
Go outside to access the window from the exterior of your home. Ask a friend to remain inside to assist with the air conditioner. You can install the air conditioner yourself, but it is much easier if you have help. If you are installing an air conditioner on the second story, you may need to open the window while your friend holds the air conditioner in place. After the unit is firmly in place, have your friend hold it while you lower the window down to lock it in place.
Open the window from the outside and ask your friend to hold the air conditioner against the lip of the window. If you're working by yourself, you will need to move the unit into position on your own.
Extend the sides of the air conditioner out until they are flush with the sides of the window. Ensure that the sides fit tightly and that there are no holes or cracks that could allow insects to enter the home.
Close the window so it is flush against the top of the air conditioner. Push on the air conditioner to ensure that it is tightly in place.
Go back inside the house and connect the air conditioner to an electrical outlet. Turn the air conditioner on to ensure that cool air is flowing.
