Things to Check on a Goodman Air Conditioner

Goodman air conditioners are a brand of central air conditioning systems that have been available since 1982. These air conditioners work in the same way that other brands of air conditioners work, and they need regular check-ups and maintenance just as any other brand to remain effective and efficient. To ensure that your Goodman air conditioner is working at peak performance, a few items need to be checked regularly as part of preventative maintenance.
  1. Duct Work

    • The outside condenser unit on your Goodman air conditioner forces the chilled air through ducts in your home and empties the conditioned air into the home through a series of registers or vents. You’ll need to occasionally check on the condition of the duct work and vents to ensure that they are in working order. Ducts can get rusty and holes can form, causing air leaks that affect cooling and can waste massive amounts of energy. Ducts need to be checked for connection leaks and the registers should be inspected to make sure they are not blocked. The general cleanliness of the duct system should be observed so dust and mold are not forming in the airways. Have them cleaned if necessary.

    Filters

    • Air filters are an important part of any air conditioner maintenance program regardless of brand name. Your Goodman air conditioner needs to be able to take air in freely to keep from overheating and to prevent inefficiency in cooling. After a short time, depending on the air quality in your home, these filters can become dirty and blocked. The filters are easily replaced. Simply locate the filter, remove it and replace it with one of compatible size. They are generally inexpensive and need to be replaced every two months or less depending on use.

    Condenser Blockage

    • The outdoor condenser draws fresh air into your air conditioning system and turns it into chilled air for the home. If the ventilation at the condenser is blocked by leaves or lawn furniture or if lawn clippings have clogged the airways going into the condenser, then the unit will not be able to perform as designed. Clear out any material that might be blocking the intakes on the condenser to ensure proper air flow.

    Refrigerant Levels and Leaks

    • Refrigerant is not a fuel for your air conditioner. An air conditioner does not “use” refrigerant gas to run. Once it is charged with the refrigerant, the level remains the same unless a leak occurs. Have an HVAC specialist check your Goodman unit for refrigerant leaks to determine whether it needs a recharge each spring so that the leak can be repaired.
