Unplug the AC unit or turn off the breaker at the service panel.
Remove all the screws from the outside of the AC cover with a screwdriver. Work the air conditioner cover free from the unit with your hands.
Locate the unit's fan, adjacent to the cooling coil. Detach the wires connecting the fan to its motor. Depending on unit design, the wires will be attached to the fan via a clip or with screws; press the release tab on the clip with your finger or remove the terminal screws with a screwdriver. For units with terminal screws, mark the terminals with the corresponding wire colors with a marking pen before removal. For example, mark a “W” for the white neutral wire, “B” for the black hot wire and “G” for the green grounding wire.
Disconnect the motor power supply wires, leading to the motor from the power supply, with a screwdriver or wrench. Mark the hot, neutral and ground wires accordingly.
Remove the mounting bolts at the base of the motor, which attach the motor to the AC unit, with a wrench. Lift the motor from the unit.
Set the new motor in place and reinstall the anchor bolts with the wrench. Attach the power supply wires to the new motor with the screwdriver or wrench. Connect the wires from the new motor to the fan with the clip or screwdriver.
Reestablish power to the unit. Turn on the air conditioner to confirm the fan is working; if the fan does not operate disconnect the power and recheck the connections. Once you have confirmed the fan is working, reinstall and fasten the cover in place with the screws and screwdriver.
