How to Change a Compressor From Single to Dual Stage

Central air conditioner compressors can be converted from single to double stage by adding a dual-run motor capacitor. This motor capacitor is designed to act as both a start capacitor, which kicks the compressor fan on and as a run capacitor, which stores an electrical charge to constantly run the compressor motor. Installation of this capacitor takes approximately less than 30 minutes. When dealing with motor capacitors, discharge the capacitor before removal to prevent electrical shock.

     Shut off the power to the AC compressor at the wall circuit breaker.

     Remove the compressor cover retaining screws or bolts with either a screwdriver or socket set and then lift the cover off.

     Lay the tip of a screwdriver across the two terminals of the old capacitor. This will discharge the capacitor.

     Remove the wires attached to each capacitor lead with the screwdriver.

   • 5

     Attach the compressor wires to the matching leads on the new capacitor.

   • 6

     Place the compressor cover back on and replace the retaining bolts or screws.

   • 7

     Restore power to the unit and test it out.
