How to Replace an Idle Bearing to an AC

If your central air conditioner's outdoor compressor makes a hideous screeching or grating sound, the chances are good that it's time to change the idle bearing. The idle bearing is a ball bearing assembly that is attached to the belt pulleys inside the AC compressor. The actual bearing typically comes built onto the belt pulley in one unit, so replacement entails removing the belt and pulley. In addition to a terrible ruckus, a bad compressor bearing can place undue strain on your compressor and run up your electric bill.
