How to Convert a Single-Phase Bridgeport Motor

The single-phase Bridgeport motor is one of the most common motors found in home air conditioning units. One of the best ways to keep your motor running smoothly is to convert the motor so it spins in reverse. This greases the stator and keeps the motor’s magnetic polarity working properly for an extended amount of time. You don’t have to be an HVAC technician to convert your motor to reverse order. You can do it yourself with just a few tools.

Turn the power to the AC unit off at the break box in your home. Turning off the unit at the thermostat is also an option, but you might have peace of mind knowing that the breaker is shut down.

    • 2

Put on your safety goggles. Use a screwdriver to remove the service panel cover on the back of the AC unit. This should give you access to the motor on the inside of the unit. Look on the bottom of the motor to locate the T5 and the T6 or the T8 terminals.

    • 3

Use a nut driver to remove the studs holding the wires to the terminals. Depending on your motor, you will need to use a ¼-inch or a 5/16-inch nut driver. Switch the wires going to the T5 terminal to the T6 or the T8 terminal on the motor.

    • 4

Secure the wires to the motor with your nut driver. Replace the service panel onto the back of the AC unit.

    • 5

Go back to the breaker box and turn it on. The motor will now run in reverse.
