How to Replace an Air Conditioner Dual Run Capacitor

A run capacitor is a part within your home air conditioning unit that stores electricity and helps to keep the unit’s motor running efficiently. A dual run capacitor includes three terminals – the “c,” “herm" and “fan” terminals. If you think your air conditioner isn’t running normally, test the dual run capacitor at any time to see if the part must be replaced. New dual run capacitors are available at a local or online air conditioner retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to your air conditioner from your circuit breaker. Remove the screws holding the side cover to the air conditioner using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 2

Lift up and remove the side cover. Locate the capacitor, which is the metal cylinder in the bottom left of the unit.

    • 3

Remove the mounting screws from the capacitor, then disconnect all the wires connected to the capacitor using needle-nose pliers.

    • 4

Lift up and remove the capacitor from the air conditioner. Connect the probe ends of a multimeter tool to the terminals of the capacitor.

    • 5

Run the multimeter to get a reading. The reading should be within 6 percent of the rating on the capacitor, which should be located on the side of the capacitor.

    • 6

Insert the new capacitor part into the air conditioner and re-insert the mounting screws. Reconnect the wires to the capacitor.

    • 7

Place the side access panel back onto the air conditioner. Re-insert the screws into the panel. Turn the electrical power back on from the circuit breaker.
