Types of Air Conditioner Plugs

In many climates, air conditioning is vital to the comfort and safety of your home on a hot summer day. If you want to save time and money, it's important to shop armed with knowledge of how many square feet you need to cool and the types of electrical plugs available in your home.
  1. 110 Plugs (15 Amp)

    • Smaller units such as portable air conditioners or window units will use this type of plug. The 125 volt/15 amp version is the typical plug that you'll find in most homes. The 250 volt/15 amp version will have two blades protruding from the plug, or it may have a third prong that serves as a ground connector.

    220 Plugs (20 Amp)

    • Larger units such as some wall-mounted air conditioners or window/wall mounted units will use a larger plug type called a 220. Variations of this plug include the 125 volt/20 Amp and the 250 volt/15 amp. You may need to hire an electrician to install a dedicated line to support a larger air conditioner that uses this size of plug.

    Considerations

    • Always check the box of the air conditioning unit to find out which type of plug it uses. Also, keep in mind that bigger doesn't always mean colder. The air conditioner's size should match the area of the room you're cooling. Oversized units can cause a variety of problems and won't work effectively.

    Household Units

    • If you're installing a unit large enough to support your entire home, then it won't require a plug. Instead, this unit will be hard wired directly to the home's electrical supply.
