How to Refurbish an Air Conditioner

Air conditioners have a variety of parts that can be cleaned. When filters, vents and other parts that air passes through become dirty and dusty, the air conditioner works less efficiently. To ensure maximum operational results and energy efficiency, follow the manufacturer’s recommended time frames for maintaining and cleaning the unit's parts and vents.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the air conditioner and unplug it from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Remove the filters. Some air conditioners have several filters, including a standard air filter and an air purifying filter. The main air filter on the air conditioner slides out of the front grille case, either from the top or the bottom. Additional filters behind the main filter are typically attached by clips that snap out.

    • 3

Vacuum any debris, such has hair and dust, off of the filter with a vacuum hose attachment.

    • 4

Rinse the filter with warm water to remove any remaining dirt and debris. Allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it in the unit.

    • 5

Remove the air conditioner’s front grille. Some models simply snap off, and others are attached with two screws near the bottom front of the air conditioner. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws then set the front grille aside.

    • 6

Fill a laundry tub with warm water and mild dish soap. Immerse the front grille in the soapy water for 15 minutes.

    • 7

Brush away any grime and debris from the air conditioner where the front grille case sits in the unit with a soft paintbrush.

    • 8

Wipe away any stubborn stains and debris from the grille case with a wet rag. Drain out the basin then refill it with warm water. Let the grille case soak in the water to remove any remaining soap residue. Set out the front grille case to air-dry completely before replacing it on the unit.
