How to Cut Open-Cell Foam Rubber to Size

Open-cell foam rubber, used typically for furniture and comfortable floor mats like those use by kindergarteners, usually comes in large sheets or blocks. To complete an upholstery project for a piece of furniture or a homemade floor mat for any reason, you need to cut the foam properly to size it to your project. Luckily, you can cut the foam with items you probably already have at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark off the cuts that you need to make to cut the foam to size with a permanent marker. Follow along a straight edge to draw straight lines and keep your angles at 90 degrees.

    • 2

Spray both sides of a serrated knife or electric carving blade with non-stick cooking spray. This will help the knife cut smoothly through the foam rubber.

    • 3

Cut along the drawn lines with a serrated knife or an electric carving knife. Work the knife back and forth slowly to avoid injury and compressing the foam, which will lead to uneven cuts.
