Mixing shellac with denatured alcohol is referred to as a cut. Shellac is derived from the cocoon secretions of the Laccifera lacca, most commonly know as the Lac bug from India. It is a natural resin that is gathered from trees where the Lac bugs live and refined into a dry flake that must be dissolved in a solution of denatured alcohol before it can be applied to wood. While premixed shellacs are commonly available in prepackaged form, most finishers prefer to mix their own shellac in order to ensure its freshness.
