How to Make a Raffia Lamp Shade

The raffia palm tree produces frond-like leaves that dry out and fray as they mature. This is the material used to make the traditional hula skirt. If you want to add a dash of that island feel to your environment, you can use the raffia hula skirt as your inspiration and create a raffia lampshade.

Things You'll Need

  • White lampshade
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Raffia border roll
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

    • 1

Place the white, thick lampshade upright in front of you. Wrap the measuring tape around the top rim of the lampshade to measure its circumference.

    • 2

Cut a segment of raffia border from the roll equal in length to the circumference of the top of the lampshade.

    • 3

Turn the segment of raffia border upside down so that the white-tabbed side of the border strip is exposed. Squeeze a line of hot glue down the center of the border strip.

    • 4

Turn the lampshade over on its side, with the narrowed top of the lampshade pressed against the glued strip. Position the strip just at the rim of the lampshade.

    • 5

Roll the lampshade down the length of the raffia border segment, adhering the two together as you roll. Once all of the lampshade is covered, allow it to dry in the upright position for 15 minutes.
