Do-It-Yourself Shoe Rack Home Project

Heaps of shoes can quickly pile up and clutter an otherwise immaculate closet. Shoe racks are reliable options for organizing and storing multiple pairs of shoes in a limited space. However, because many shoes racks are only large enough to hold a few pairs of shoes, purchasing enough store-bought shoe racks to support your growing shoe collection can be expensive. Custom-make your own shoe racks out of inexpensive materials that can be expanded with every new pair of shoes you buy.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a handsaw to cut two sonotubes into 8-inch pieces so that each sonotube yields six small tubes. Cut plywood into 12 eight-by-ten inch strips and 24 eight by 4.5-inch strips.

    • 2

Paint the sonotubes and plywood with two coats of paint and let dry.

    • 3

Insert plywood into each sonotube so that the plywood divides the sonotube in half. Insert the smaller plywood strips perpendicular to the first divider to divide the sonotube into four even compartments.

    • 4

From the outside of the tube, place two screws on each side of the plywood to hold it in place. Your screws should be placed two inches from each of the tube openings.

    • 5

Place five of the tubes on the floor horizontally along the base of your closet wall with the openings facing out. Apply wood glue between each of the tubes to hold them together.

    • 6

Make another row of four tubes, gluing them to one another with wood glue. Position these on top of the first row so that each tube fits between two tubes below it.

    • 7

Continue making rows of tubes with one less than the row below them until you run out of tubes.

    • 8

Insert one shoe in each compartment so that each tube can hold four shoes.
