How to Make a Crow Tribe Bead Necklace

A new version of bead work made its way onto tribal lands when white travelers and traders introduced Native American tribes to tiny glass seed beads. Used amongst traditional and natural materials like hides, quills and claws, the European bead style was incorporated into war jackets, bonnets, satchels and jewelry. A Crow Tribe necklace can be made by sewing rows of glass beads onto a fabric strip using favored pale blue and dusty rose hues. This chocker style necklace allows the intricate geometric bead work that the Crow Tribe was known for to be prominently displayed.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which section of the geometric Crow Tribe pattern you will be replicating in bead work. Use a pen and ruler to mark off the section and create a grid over the section to serve as your bead pattern.

    • 2

Thread the needle and knot the end of the thread. Beginning at the left top corner of the fabric strip, push the threaded needle through the backside of the fabric towards the front, pulling the thread taut so the knot is flush to the backside of the fabric.

    • 3

Using the pattern grid as a guide, thread the first row of necessary beads onto the thread. At the opposite top corner of the fabric strip, push the needle through the front of the fabric and out the backside of the fabric. Pull the thread taut, double knot flush to the fabric and trim excess thread with the scissors.

    • 4

Repeat the threading and tacking process for each row of the pattern, beginning directly below the first line. Bead strands should line up flush to one another to ensure the pattern is executed properly.

    • 5

Rethread the needle and knot at the bottom if necessary. Cross-stitch over the original horizontal threads between every few beads to secure bead strands taut to the fabric strip. Knot any thread ends flush to the fabric and trim as necessary.
