Place the furniture item atop a drop cloth.
Open paint cans with a flat-head screwdriver. If using an acrylic paint, open the tube and use the spike at the tip of the cap to puncture the seal on the paint tube nozzle.
Prepare the paint. Stir the textured latex paint with a wooden paint stirrer. Pay special attention to the texture particles on the bottom of the paint can. Thoroughly mix the paint and the texture particles. Acrylic paints generally do not require any sort of preparation.
Apply an even coat of paint to the particle board. A paintbrush provides greater control over the textured paint's particles. Spread clumps of particles into bare regions for even coverage. Squeeze the acrylic paint onto a sponge and sponge it onto the particle board. Allow the first coat of paint to dry thoroughly before applying subsequent coats. The drying time will vary according to the paint type, so consult the packaging.
Mix textured paint every 10 to 15 minutes with the stirrer to maintain an equal distribution of the particles.
Apply three coats of textured paint to create a uniform texture over the particle board. Sponge on two coats of acrylic paint.
Apply one to two coats of clear spray-on lacquer over the acrylic paint. This will seal the paint, making it more durable and scratch-resistant.
