How to Make a Cubby for Kids

Cubbies are useful for kids' rooms and classrooms. They are small and portable enough to carry toys and big enough to provide storage for a wide range of items, including books and clothing. Cubbies are a versatile, inexpensive form of storage that can be stacked in fun shapes. You can even use them to create shelves or flip them over to use as stools.

Instructions

  1. Preparing the wood

    • 1

Cut the wood into five squares. Each square should measure 1-by-1-foot in size.

    • 2

Sand all edges of the wood and slightly blunt the edges so as to prevent splinters and sharp angles on the finished product.

    • 3

Paint each square, including the edges. Let the wood sit in a well-ventilated area until the paint is completely dry.

    Assembling the cubby

    • 4

Take two squares and place them edge to edge to form an "L" shape. Nail the two pieces together along the seam.

    • 5

Repeat the previous step with two other squares to form another "L" shape.

    • 6

Place the two "L" shapes together to form a square box. Nail the pieces together along the two seams.

    • 7

Take the final square and place it flat over one of the open sides of the box to form a cube. Nail the piece down so the nails go into the edges of the other four pieces for a secure back. Flip it over and check for nails poking out of the wood.
