How to Make a Gin Pole for an Antenna Tower

A gin pole provides support for an antenna during construction. Large antennae are too big to build on the ground and raise as a single unit. Instead, the gin pole raises each component of the antenna into place. The pole attaches to the antenna at the bottom. The top has a pulley. The next component attaches to the pulley and workers on the ground lift the component into place while a worker on the antenna attaches the new component to the growing antenna. The worker climbs up the new component to move the gin pole and the process continues.

Drill a hole through the steel pipe 2 inches from one end. Insert a 4-inch eye bolt through the hole and tighten the nut to hold the bolt in place.

    • 2

Attach the pulley to the eye bolt with the quick link.

    • 3

Drill a hole 12 inches from the opposite end of the pole from the pulley. Drill a second hole 18 inches from the end, 6 inches from the first hole. Insert the last two eye bolts into the holes and secure with their nuts.

Attach the next section of the antenna to one end of the rope and thread the other end of the rope through the pulley. Attach the gin pole to the base of the antenna with the U bolts. Pull the rope to lift the section into place.
