How to Make a Homemade Drawing Light Box

If you ask any artist or animator, a light box or light board is a must-have item for his craft. Light boxes are perfect for drawing or tracing but can be very expensive and heavy to lug around. By making your own light box, you can save hundreds of dollars for something just as functional but also portable.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a frosted plastic storage box that’s large enough to accommodate work space for drawings. Frosted storage boxes cut glare and can be found at most home, office and craft stores.

    • 2

Orient the fluorescent lamp in the center and underside of the lid. Glue or tape the fluorescent lamp securely to the lid.

    • 3

Cut a small notch with a utility knife on the side of the lid wide enough for the power cord to pass through. This is so the lid can close easily.

    • 4

Plug in and turn on the fluorescent lamp. Fasten the lid to the storage box, with the fluorescent lamp beneath the lid.

    • 5

You are now ready to use your new light box for drawings and cool 2-D animations. Unplug the lamp when done.
