Homemade Clothing Rack

Plumbing pipe (polyvinyl chloride--PVC) is a good medium to make many projects around the home. You can make a homemade clothing rack with PVC pipe in as little as one afternoon. The pipe is lightweight, so once you construct your new clothing rack you will be able to move it to any area of the home at any given time.
  1. Materials

    • Construct a clothing rack that is 36 inches wide with PVC pipe. You will need:
16 feet of 1-inch PVC pipe
      6 plastic elbows
      two 4-way connectors
      a hacksaw
      PVC glue

Cut the pipe into four lengths of 36 inches and four lengths of 12 inches. Lay out all of your PVC pieces and have the glue ready to go.

    Construction--Dry Fit

    • It is necessary to put the PVC pieces together without glue first. This is considered a dry fit. This will make sure that the pipe has been measured and cut to the right size before you glue the pieces together. Once the glue is applied, it will be impossible to break apart.

Lay the four long pieces on the floor in a square. Attach the two sides to the top with an elbow on each side.

The bottom 36-inch length will attach to the sides with a four-way connector. A four-way connector will look like a T with an additional hole on the side of the T, at the T-junction.

The side PVC pieces attach to the top hole and the bottom piece attaches to the side hole with the T ends open.

Attach the 12-inch pieces into the open holes of the four-way to form leg braces for the clothing rack. The remaining elbows will attach to the ends of these 12-inch pieces as small legs.

Stand the rack upright. All pieces should be fitting correctly. If they are not, take the section apart that is not fitting and use the hacksaw to trim off any excess pipe. Refit the sections and determine if the rack is square.

    Construction--Gluing

    • Once the clothing rack is square, begin at the bottom and glue all pieces together by using the wand in the PVC pipe glue. Apply glue to both areas and fit together. Work quickly as the glue dries in 5 minutes.

Allow the glue to dry completely for at least 30 minutes before moving the clothing rack. The clothing rack can be used in the laundry room or bedroom for extra clothes.
