Deer Antlers for Crafts

If you have a deer hunter in the family, then decorating with deer antlers is a perfect way to re-purpose something that may have otherwise been thrown away. Interior decorators have long used antlers in rustic lodge décor. To get the same look without the expense of hiring a professional, opt to make some crafts on your own.
  1. Table

    • Depending on the size of the antlers, you can build a coffee table. Make sure the antlers you plan to use have several points so it will support the table top. Using four to six antlers, weave the points together to form a circular base. Some antlers should be pointing up and others down to make the piece sturdier. When you are satisfied with the look, lay it on a flat surface to ensure it is as level at possible, repositioning as necessary. Add a beveled glass or wood top to complete the table.

    Wall Hangings

    • Mirrors are a popular choice for using deer antlers and are very simple to make. With a standard round or oval mirror, position the antlers along the edge to form a frame. Twist one eye screw into the back of the antlers on either side of the frame, then loop a wire from one to the other so the mirror can be hung.

A traditional use of deer antlers is as a coat or hat rack. Mount a full rack of antlers onto a wood base using wood screws and hang it on the wall. It is better to have a rack with many points for this application, because each point can be used as a hanger for the hats and coats.

    Lighting

    • Chandeliers constructed from deer antlers give a distinctive look to your décor. Kits are available from many online sources, such as AntlerLightingKits.com, that provide you with the electrical elements needed to build a chandelier. Use your own antlers and create a one of a kind piece of art that is also functional.

Lamps are also a good way to showcase deer antlers. Take two or more sets of antlers and wire them together at the base using heavy gauge wire. Sit on a flat surface with the antler tips down to form a base. Using a table lamp kit, which is available at Home Depot and Lowe's, string the wiring through the middle of antlers and pull out through the top. Using a drill, attach the lamp harp through the top of the antler base. Choose a lamp shade in a natural color that will coordinate with the lamp's rustic appearance.
