How to Build Barbie's Closet

Barbie dolls are known for their many accessories, especially when it comes to clothes. If the clutter becomes too much, you can buy an expensive Barbie closet made from plastic and cardboard to hold the accessories. However, you can build a better Barbie closet yourself for a much lower price. The hard part will be finding a large shoebox, such as one used for winter boots, that has an attached lid flap which secures with a tab. Gathering the remaining materials together is simple.

Things You'll Need

  • Large shoebox
  • Scrap cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Duct tape
  • Contact paper
  • Screwdriver
  • Wooden dowel
  • Saw
  • Glue
  • Large beads

Instructions

    • 1

Open the shoebox and clean out any paper or inserts inside. Place the box so that the short side is on the table and the flap opens like a door. Measure the size of the lower, inside “floor” of the Barbie closet. Cut out a piece of cardboard from the scrap piece that matches the floor in length and is 2 inches tall.

    • 2

Use duct tape to secure the cardboard piece like a low wall along the front, inside “floor” of the Barbie closet. Tape the piece in a way that creates a secure bin at the bottom of the closet to hold shoes and other small items.

Measure the inside of the box and cut the required amount of contact paper. Neatly cover the inside of the box and lid with contact paper. Cut the contact paper as needed to cover the tape and extra cardboard piece. Close the box and repeat this process to neatly cover the outside with contact paper. Cut the contact paper as needed to cover the tab part of the lid.

Place the box so that the short side is on the table, the bin is on the closet floor and the flap opens like a door. Measure about 3/4 of the way up the sides of the box. Use a screwdriver to poke a hole on each side of the box. Keep the holes even. Use the scissors to trim the ripped edges of the holes.

    • 5

Insert a 1/2-inch thick wooden dowel into the holes to create a bar across the Barbie closet. Cut the dowel with a saw so that no more than a 1/2-inch of wood pokes out of each side of the box. Glue the dowel in place and let dry.

Find two large beads that have 1/2-inch wide holes and are at least a 1/2-inch thick. Slip a bead over on of the bits of dowel sticking out from the box and glue it in place. Repeat with the second bead on the other dowel end. The beads should be the right size to create rounded tips on the dowel edges to help prevent injury.
