How to Build Your Own Ball Pit

The ball pit is a favorite attraction for many youngsters at the playground, but it can also be a hygienic nightmare. If you can't bear the thought of your little one gallivanting about a giant communal tub of plastic balls that countless other toddlers have shared, you can create your own indoor ball pit for your child and his friends to enjoy. Rather than buying a pre-made ball-pit kit, build your own homemade version and fill it with colorful plastic balls.

Two 4-foot-long pieces of 2 x 12-inch lumber
Two 3-foot 10½-inch-long pieces of 2 x 12-inch lumber
Four 11¼-inch-long pieces of 4 x 4-inch lumber
2½ to 3-inch nails
Hammer
Approximately 250 plastic ball-pit balls

  Choose a carpeted area in which to build your ball pit, as the carpet will serve as the bottom of the ball pit.

  Arrange the four 2 x 12-inch planks of lumber into a 12-inch-high rectangular frame, with the two longer planks forming the ends and the shorter planks forming the sides. Nail the planks together at the corners.

  Stand one 4 x 4-inch piece of lumber flush inside each corner of the frame for support. Nail one of the corner supports in place, then nail the rest of the supports in place, "alternating corners in a diagonal pattern," as recommended by BobVila.com.

  Fill the wooden frame with plastic balls. Don't overfill the pit, as children will displace the balls when they enter.
